Factions, groups and relationships

A game is a web of loyalties: the queen's guard, a hidden circle, a band of travellers, a sister who is also a rival. Larpinq keeps factions, player groups and relationships between characters, and shows them on the character page.

Factions and groups

Open Characters, then Factions. There are two kinds:

  • Faction: run by game masters. Only game masters create a faction and place characters in it.
  • Group: run by players. A player creates a group with one of their own characters as Leader.

Each has a Visibility. An open faction or group is found by everyone who plays. A secret one is found only by game masters and by its leader. A member of a secret faction sees its name on their own character, and nothing else about it.

Joining a group

A membership has a Role (leader or member) and a Status that moves with the buttons on the membership page:

FromToWho
RequestedActive or declinedThe group's leader
RequestedLeftThe player who asked
InvitedActive or declinedThe player of the invited character
InvitedRemovedThe group's leader
ActiveLeftThe player of the member
ActiveRemovedThe group's leader

A player asks to join with one of their own characters; the leader invites. Nobody but a game master makes a character an active member directly. A membership stays with its faction and character: to change group, leave and ask again. Game masters can do all of this for any faction or group.

Relationships

Open a character. Relationships lists the relationships the character names, and Named by others lists the ones that name it. A relationship has a Kind (family, ally, rival, romance, enemy, mentor or other), a Description and Known to:

  • Game masters: only game masters read it. Only game masters record these.
  • Owners: game masters and the players of both characters read it. A player records these from their own character.

OpenRegister applies these rules to every way of reading, so a secret faction or a game master's relationship never reaches a player through a list, the API or an export.

Next: open Factions and add the first faction of your world.
